What Are “X” and “O” Options on Sliding Windows?
In sliding windows, “X” and “O” designations refer to the movable (operable) and fixed (non-operable) panels of the window. These terms help both homeowners and professionals specify the desired configuration when ordering.
- “X” represents the operable (movable) panel that slides open and closed.
- “O” represents the fixed (non-movable) panel that remains stationary.
For example, an XO Window has a sliding left panel and fixed right panel; an OX Window is the reverse; and an XOX Window has a fixed center with both side panels sliding. The configuration you choose depends on room layout, ventilation needs, and accessibility preferences.
How to place an order based on X and O options
1. Determine the desired configuration
Decide if you need a single slider (XO or OX) or a three-panel slider (XOX). Consider which side you want to open for ventilation.
2. Provide exterior orientation
Always describe the X and O orientation as viewed from the outside. For example, XO means the left panel slides and the right panel is fixed.
3. Specify frame size and direction
Provide the dimensions of the window and confirm whether it’s a left-hand or right-hand slider based on the X/O configuration.
4. Confirm glass and frame options
Select your glass type (e.g., Low-E, tempered) and frame color/finish to match your home’s design. Specify any customization like screens or grille patterns.
